Sangolli Rayanna (1798-1831) was the army chief of Kittur ruled by Rani Chennamma. He fought valiantly against the British East India Company till his death. He participated in the 1824 rebellion and was arrested by the British and was released later. He continued to fight the British, mobilized local people and started a guerrilla type war against the British. The British ultimately captured him and hanged him to death in 1831. It will be a befitting tribute to Sangolli Rayanna to have a Sainik School in his birth place so as to prepare the youth of the area to join the defense forces. The youth from Belagavi and surrounding districts will find the Sainik School conducive to better quality education and also a path way to the defense services.
